Philippians 3:19 (NIV®)
Their destiny is destruction, their god is their stomach, and their glory is in their shame. Their mind is set on earthly things.
It grieves me that many of God’s people have set aside His commandment and counsel regarding idolatry. Most of us would never with a clear countenance worship an image of a pagan god. But idolatry is about priority, and we have made priorities out of other things like comfort, and pleasure, and indulgence. Social media has made this easy. We subtly boast about the houses we buy, the vacations we take, and the experiences we provide our children. Even Christians have mastered the “humble brag”—seemingly modest statements that, in fact, reek of pride. It is easy to set our minds on earthly things and easy to convince ourselves that the blessings we enjoy are due to something we have done. These attitudes are not what God wants for us, and they do nothing to enhance our Christian witness. So, let’s think about what our priorities should be: Our destiny is Heaven, our God is God Almighty, and our glory is in the Lord. Let’s be humble, and grateful, and set our mind on those heavenly things.
THINK ABOUT IT
Always put God first in your life. He will bless your obedience and direct your path.
PRAYER
Heavenly Father, help me recognize anything or anyone I treasure more than You. Forgive me for exalting earthly things above Your Kingdom purposes. I repent of this idolatry and release myself from it. May You always be my greatest desire. In Jesus' name, amen
Blessings,
David
